Guide: Getting Started

Once a new game has started, a set of Getting Started tips will display on the left-hand side of the inventory screen. The player is well-advised to follow these instructions, as they really only spell out largely inevitable survival strategies as well as the minimum requirements for a good start into the game anyway.

Getting Started tips: Keeping Fed

☐ Purify dirty water on a fire

Dirty water (causing infections when drunk) will soon purify into clean water wheen cooked on a campfire .

☐ Pick kelp from lakes

Kelp can be collected underwater by picking them in ponds and lakes.

☐ Craft a bow

A further five sticks and six cordage are needed to craft a wooden bow. In order for the bow to be of use, however arrows are required.

☐ Hunt a small animal with the bow

Both chickens and rabbits will run from the player once they sense them. It's advisable not to get any closer once their HP bar is starting to show up and shoot them with an arrow.

☐ Cook meat on the fire

Meat can be placed on a burning fire (a campfire or a woodburner) in order to cook it, thereby greatly increasing its nutritious value.

☐ Kill a predator

Using a wooden bow requires three arrows to kill low-level wolves.

☐ Butcher a predator

Kneeling over large game with an axe equipped will allow the player to butcher their kill.

Further Information

  • The very tip of the arrow indicates the centre of the player's aim very reliably. The further away the target, however, the higher the player will need to aim in order to adjust for the drop. Archery skills can be practiced on trees, from which arrows are always retrievable.
  • It is possible to land two hits from great enough a distance before a targeted wolf will reach the player. However, the animal may manage to injure and possibly infect the player if they don't turn to run timely enough. Instead, most beginners will probably prefer to shot a wolf only once and run right away. Either way, once outrun, the wolf can be targeted again and dealt the final blow.
  • The damage done by three wooden arrows fired from a wooden bow amounts exactly to the full HP of level 3 wolves. As a result, such wolves will require a fourth hit if the player doesn't finish them off fast enough and they've restored even a single HP in the meantime.
