Mining

Mining is an indispensable activity given that most mineral ores (copper, iron, potassium, sandstone, zinc, crystal, and coal) are crucial resources and required in many (particularly advanced) crafting recipes.

Locations

Surface / Rocky areas

Copper, iron, potassium, and zinc ore can be found overground (or rarely also in shallow water) as ore nodes on large rocks. The same is true for lithium, obsidian, and silicon ore, but those are notoriously less common and occur somewhat reliably only in a few regions respectively.

Underwater

Sandstone can only be found underwater in ponds and lakes.

Coal, Crystal, and Phosphate are significantly more difficult to obtain and occur only in the hazardous and hard-to-access underwater caves.

Finally, Black Crystal is exclusively found in the downright lethal subterranean lava caves.

Tools

Mining Drill

Ores can be mined manually using a Pick Axe (or, yielding much less usable ore and under much greater wear for the tool, a normal axe). In addition, the overground ores can also be mined automatically using a mining drill.

Refinement

Refinery

Gathered ores require a refinery to process and purify into a more refined form to be used as crafting materials in recipes.

Generally the raw minerals refine at a one-to-one ratio with the exception of Phosphate, which yields three portions of phosphorus to one piece of ore.
