This is a guideline for all things related to images. Subsistence Wiki uses icons and images to document the visual elements of the game. We distinguish between icons and images in that:
- Icons are usually found on in-game tooltips representing various aspects of the game such as items, animal carcasses, containers, etc. Icons are uploaded in the .png (Portable Network Graphics) format.
- Images document the game's graphical elements such as environment, animals, bases, etc. Images are uploaded in the .jpg (JEPG) format.
One of the primary reasons for using the JPEG format for images is that they typically have smaller file sizes at large dimensions than PNG files which make them significantly faster to load. JPEG is a "lossy file format", a trade-off between the original image quality versus a smaller file size.
Icons on the other hand, use the PNG format because it is a lossless format meaning that details are not lost during compression. Using the in-game screenshot function will create a JPEG image first, so it is recommended to use another utility to capture icons that preserve quality.
You will ultimately need to use a graphics program to edit a screenshot to crop it for size and composition and to eliminate any extraneous elements of the game's user interface (UI).
Icon Guidelines
- Icons must be in the .png format.
- Icons should be 120x120 pixels in dimension.
- If the icon has transparent pixels in game, it should also have transparent pixels on the Wiki.

Image Guidelines
- Images must be in the .jpg format.
- Images should be created with a game resolution of at least 1080p so they are detailed. Please do not re-scale images from a lower resolution to avoid pixelation.
- Images should be free from UI elements - such as menus, bars, names etc.
- Images should have good lighting and composition - avoid night time or during storm whenever possible unless intended to show that element.
- Images should be from 1st person view to showcase what the image is without character in view - unless the image is of clothing or an item in hands.
