Farming is an easy way to get resources with minimal effort after the initial investment as well as getting some late game resources. Farming consists of growing plants in Plant Bed and also raising animals in an Animal Housing.

Growing Plants

The Plants table lists the various plants that a player can grow, the yield, time taken to grow under Grow Lights (GL) and the time under Natural Light (NL)

Plants
Plant Yield GL Fertilized GL Not Fertilized NL Fertilized NL Not Fertilized
Medicinal 25 1:03 2:06 3:22 6:45
Carrot 3 1:11 2:23 3:47 7:37
Cotton 3 1:11 2:23 3:47 7:37
Tomato 2 1:11 2:23 3:47 7:37
Onion 3 1:15 2:29 4:00 8:06
Potato 3 1:19 2:39 4:15 8:32

To grow completely, each plant uses 27% water (regardless of fertilizer) and if fertilized will use 32 fertilizer (the plant bed holds 77 fertilizer). The consumption of water and fertilizer is calculated per plant, fully grown plants and empty spaces do not consume water or fertilizer. Rain will naturally water plants if outside.

It is quicker to shift-right click seeds into the plant bed than to shift-left click them.

Raising Animals

The player can raise Chickens and Rabbits in an Animal Housing, both animals can be caught by hand in the wild and there is also a chance when shot by an arrow for them to be injured and then placed into the Animal Housing by either shift-left click or dragging them into the appropriate slot.

Catching chickens by hand is significantly easier than catching rabbits as chickens will stop regularly allowing the player to catch up to them while rabbits need to be cornered to catch them by hand.

A player can run about 1000m with a caught animal in their inventory before it will die, the transport time does not depend on an animals health, an animal at 5 health (injured from being shot), 25 health (caught in wild) or 100 health (domesticated) can all travel alive the same distance in the players inventory.

Animals will only go to Level 3 inside the Animal Housing, the Free Range (FR) upgrade is required to allow animals to continue to Level 10. For yields see Chicken or Rabbit, both animals yield 153 fertilizer over time as they get to level 10.

Animals
Animal Water 10 Stages Food 10 Stages (FR) Time per Stage Total Time
Chicken 119% 101% (6 tomatoes = 100%) 0:16.9 2:49
Rabbit 119% 101% 0:16.9 2:49

FAQ

How long can an animal survive with 100% food and water in a free range Animal Housing?
Each animal uses 0.705% water per day, food is used slower when free range than water.

# of Animals Days (minutes)
1 3.9 (141)
2 1.96 (71)
3 1.3 (47)

How many chickens are needed to get a Roast Chicken meal per day?

It takes a chicken 169 minutes from placement into the housing to reach level 10, each day is 36 minutes, so a chicken takes 4.7 days to reach level 10 (169/36). This means an average of 4.7 chickens in Animal Housings to get a Roast Chicken meal per day.

How many tomatoes are needed for these 5 chickens?

A chicken needs 6 tomatoes to get to level 10 (101% food) and produces 153 fertilizer in this time.

6 tomatoes could be 80% fertilized (153/190=80.5%, the 190 is the fertilizer needed for 6 plants).

Fertilized grow time * 80% + Non-fertilized grow time * 20% = Total grow time
1:11*80%=0:56.8 2:23*20%= 0:28.6 0:56.8 + 0:28.6 = 1:25.4

A chicken takes 2:49 to get to level 10, this means 3 tomatoes could get a second harvest in 2:50.8 which is almost the same time.
With 3 tomato plant spaces per chicken and 5 chickens, 15 tomato plants are needed consistently if grow light is used and chicken fertilizer is applied to the tomatoes when available. With 8 plant locations per bed, 2 plant beds is enough for 5 chickens.
A third plant bed is recommended to allow for snacks and additional time between harvesting.

How many roast vegetables need to be grown for these meals?

A single potato plant unfertilized under a grow light takes about the same time as a chicken and produces 2 potatoes available, so one of each vegetable plant per chicken is enough.

Ideally planting a bed for each vegetable for each player is sufficient for a roast meal per day allowing some additional time between harvesting and planting.

Potatoes are also used for alcohol (an ingredient in Molotov Cocktail and Furniture), growing additional of these can be helpful.

Is it worth feeding Tomato Soup to animals?

One tomato soup consists of 2 tomatoes and 8 medicinal herbs, plus uses 80 power to create. One soup will provide 48% food.

It takes 6 raw tomatoes to fill the Animal Housing. Each tomato takes 27 power if grown under a grow light, two extra tomatoes is 54 power.

Soup to fill an Animal Housing consumes 106 additional power and consumes 16 medicinal herbs. Plus takes the player more interaction time to cook the soup. This makes it an inefficient option with raw tomatoes easier to use and cheaper.

My fridge is full, what do I do?

Ideally as the vegetable stocks increase, store more seeds to take to other bases or use as a stockpile in case the fridge fails. When a high demand for vegetables occurs, stored seeds can be used instead of turning harvested plants into seeds for re-planting.
